And, of course, there is everything in between as well.
The RPG'er will go fishing with a rod & reel, and sit on the dock quietly relaxing, not really caring if he catches anything or not. The FPS'ers will go fishing by throwing dynamite in the water. The RPG'er will say "what's your rush, relax" - the FPS'er will say that using a rod and reel is not an "optimal" or "useful" build.
Obviously, this forum thread is "by FPS, for FPS".

You forgot a third kind of player, the RTS player. The RTS player will search for those things that are most challenging. If it truly makes gameplay more interesting, they're willing to run inferior builds. They are of the opinion, however, that you don't need to do that in a good game, a game where the best strategy is also the most enjoyable one. Time spent on a single objective is irrelevant as long as that objective is enjoyable. This is the kind of player that has problems with the direction PvP is taking because quite frankly, if you take an inferior strategy, you lose and the current "best" strategies are terribly boring to play. The RTS player doesn't care about PvE balance because if needed, he can always take an inferior but more fun build.
